ABOUT: Pissoir
The object is built as a urinal. On It, a self-portrait of me with a baby stroller. The woman is coming towards us from the bottom of the ocean, full of determination still wet and with seaweed hanging from hair and body.
When working on the piece my perspectives shifted constantly. Some days I saw it as humoristic and pathetic, and sometimes I found it mainly to be a plain symbol. In the somewhat humoristic vision, I saw a man in front of the urinal, faced with the choice to pee on the holy mother figure with the pram or subdues his needs; to commit to a pathetic action or to allow the bladder to grow. A serious battle between spirit and body. The more symbolistic perspective starts from motives and material. The picture is loaded with heavy symbols: the mother figure, the sea, the pram with its unknown content. The material and functional of the work; the urinal and the grid made by the tails make up the masculine components of the work, contrasting the feminine ones. One may experience a tension between the female motif and the male components, and partly between the two different forces encountered by her powerful progress and a possible beam of piss hitting the surface of the subject. The battle has its shields and weapons. A threat from urinating men is constant overhanging, cyclopean eye protects the woman from humiliation if anyone should pee on her. The cyclopean eye may also be seen as a threat to order as it represents the ”third eye” which in many cultures is considered a seat for intuitive knowledge. The tile forms a rectangular net that she moves into. Are there standards and rule systems that she should be caught by or threatens to destroy?
